Powell and Jaime Williams' Diagonal label switch gear with an outstanding haul of neo-wave riders from the infamous $hit & $hine. Doing to techno and disco what the New York No Wave oiks did to rock in the late '70, $&$ deconstruct and jerry-build loping loops on four hypnotic, barely-hinged bombs. It's dance music with balls, big hairy ones, that refuses prissy mixdowns and metronomic marching music in favour of bodily fluid rhythms and the sorta sexed-up febrility what can't be faked. 'Blowhannon' struts up first with threatening bassline revs and slender disco memes salted with distortion and a subtle lysergic patina luring us into their auld world; 'Value' follows with lumbering machine funk, prodding in all the right places and infected with demented voices; 'Shower Curtain' locks down to a heady, f**ked-up disco buck with noisy drums all up in yer chops and filtered to freak; 'Dixie Peach' closes with lip-bitingly potent effect, transcending garage rock, Detroit house and sleazy disco with sozzled swagger. From what we hear, this is the start of a deadly run of releases from Diagonal, and you can definitely sign us up for the ride. Big recommendation!
